I thought that it was a great book for people that play any sports. He seperates the chapters into certain goals that you should carry and what characteristics should be important to you. He talks about keeping friends and family close, because they will always be their to lift you up from tough situations. He also talks about being motivated in everything you do. He also talks about learning from your mistakes and getting better. He talks about what he learned from his former coach Bob Knight and how he was a great mentor for him. It is a great book to learn from and it teaches you how to grow as a basketball player and also a person. Coach K obviously tries to stay out of the way of his players genius and tendencies. I liked the sections where he learned better methods of playing from many of his great players. Coach K likes to focus his teams attention. Rather than leading into a game with a long speech, he will put one word up and ask the team to keep that word in mind. It will be a word that reflects something needed to keep the teams focus before a game. So it is a good book so you should read this.

Coach K likes to refer to himself as a teacher, and I would have to agree. This book is a straightforward sports take on values for life, and Coach K comes across as a man of true character and the ability to express it simply. Each chapter is titled as a word like pride, work, selflessness, and courage. IN each Coach explains what this word means to him, with references to people in his life, most often from the Duke basketball program. The overall focus is on your team. Who is your team, and are you helping it?

I'm not a big Coach K fan, but I do think my opinion improved after reading this. Interesting to read about some of his experiences/stories and some good tips or thoughts. I was hoping for a lot more though, to be honest. Maybe he should have focused a little more on even half of the forty traits.

A fairly typical sports-as-metaphor-for-life kind of book, but it's a quick read, easily digestible, and includes interesting anecdotes from Coach K's life.

I am huge coach K fan. He's the reason I have been a Duke fan for so many years. Reading his philosophy in coaching and in life just solidified why I have always gravitated to his style.

This book, Beyond Basketball: Coach K’s Keywords for Success, by Mike Krzyzewski, with Jamie K. Spatola, was a pretty short book. It was a book that gave a lot of great advice on how to live your life. To me, that was what was cool about it. Coach K’s key were what he always shares with his Duke basketball teams and makes his players live. These were all things that regular people can do every day to improve their lives and to be a better person with their families. Coach K’s philosophy in this book was to take each word that he used to form his life and his basketball program, and tell a personal about that word. This is where the book was interesting. It was all about doing the right thing through all parts of your life and that will make you successful in whatever you do. This book took thirty eight words, everything from adaptability to work and defined what those words meant to the coach and gave an example or two of how those words were used and practiced in the Duke basketball program. “You hear, you forget; you see, you remember; you do, you understand.” ( pg 61) This quote was in the chapter talking about fundamentals and why they are important. I think this statement by Coach K pretty much sums up the book. All of these words in the book are mastered if you practice, or do them, all the time. The Coach talked about his players owning these words and all that they were about. Sometimes the words weren't positive, like the word failure. If it was a negative word than the lesson was in learning how to overcome these things in your team or group. Coach K also made a point in this book how you can never truly master all of this. You have to always be trying to get better. He makes this known with the next quote, “To me, living is learning. Once you stop learning, you are no longer living.” (pg. 74) The coach makes a point throughout this book that he is not the perfect guy that everyone thinks he is because of the Duke basketball team’s success. All the stories in here are about things he has learned, or is still trying to learn, from people that he thinks are his mentors. People like his older brother who is a fire fighter in Chicago and his old coach Bobby Knight. Coach K also thought he learned a lot about balance between his family life and basketball from his wife and his two daughters. Beyond Basketball: Coach K’s Keywords for Success was a great book to get you wanting to do things in everyday life in a correct way. I really got the feeling from reading this book that if practiced the key things that Coach K talked about, you could overcome anything and be a success.

Coach K is one of the most famous and successful coaches of basketball ever. In beyond basketball, he mentions a key word, that he describes. Krzyzewski, does this in a much higher level way. He uses application, evaluation, and deep understanding of these words, to go beyond just basketball. When Coach K defines words, he uses stories or examples. This allows people to relate to the definition and get inspired in a special way.In the locker room, Mike writes a word on the board that he wants his team to focus on in the game and in life. When a player gets upset or looses focus, all they have to do is remember the word and get back on track. One of my favorite words is Motivation. "Even as a coach and a leader, I will not always drive the bus. At times, I have to let others take the wheel"(Krzyzewski 111). This figurative quote talks about how he lets other players motivate the team. The players have to get motivated and inspired and fired up, and lead the team. they will even lift up the coach and motivate his spirit. " According to him, 'It was one of those games where you'd rather die than lose'"(Krzyzewski 162). This quote talks about will. Will is the perserverence and want to get something done or fight through. One of Mikes players, Steve Wojo contained incredible will, were he wanted it so bad, he pushed beyond his physical limits. The final score against UNC was 77-75, and they went home with the victory.Friendship and Family are two more important words Coach K talks about. "Sometimes listening to a friend is like listening to yourself"(Krzyzewski 77). Friendship is one of the most precious things in life. A friend is someone that has your back, and is unconditional. He talks about how they can help direct you in the right path. Real friends are like brothers and sisters. "A person is never more comfortable then when they are with their family, which is why I try to create a family atmosphere with my team..."(Krzyzewski 74). Friendship is great, but there is nothing like family. The comfort and support from your family os one of the most important things in life. So try to make relationships with people and groups seem like a family. This will help you achieve success.Mike truly inspired me and probably many others in this basketball success book, as well as real life examples. This book deserves four stars for the creativity of the way Krzyzewski defines his words and motivates people. I think the theme of this book is success as a leader. He talks about how all these things can give you success and happiness. This is a manual on how to be a great leader.

Garrett HoffmanCreative WritingMiss ThompsonJanuary 14, 2013 Book Recommendation “Beyond Basketball” by: Mike Krzyzewksi and Jamie SpatolaDo you like winning? Well Coach K does, and this book goes in depth about the lessons that come with it. It’s not just basketball; it’s the experiences that come with basketball. “Beyond Basketball” by Mike Krzyzewski and Jamie Spatola is a kind of nonfiction book that provides inspiration and motivation to anyone that reads it. The book provides many great lessons and advice on how to handle situations that might arise in the future. You don’t have to like basketball to read this book because it offers LIFE lessons that can apply to all people. Coach K wants to give his keywords to people so they can exceed expectations and succeed in the things they do. This advice pertains to basketball, but most of all it pertains to real life as well. Mike and his daughter bring up many experiences that have happened to them, and how they handled those situations. He did not always handle the situations the right way, but looking back he knows what he should have done, and that’s what he shares with us. Not all of this book is advice, but some of it is simply values that we need to emphasize more. Some of these values include: respect, love, and integrity. Being a coach, he always stresses these values with his team, but if one uses them in their everyday life, they will live better and succeed. An excerpt from the book that illustrates courage is “the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all the others.” (38) If you like this book, you may also like books that are meant to motivate and give advice to someone. You don’t have to like sports to like this book, because all of his teachings can be applied in real life. Hence the title: “Beyond Basketball”. I rate this book four out of five stars because I found it very beneficial for me. When I first started reading it, the basketball season had just started. I was able to use this book as motivation for the season that was to come.

Coach K’s Motivation and Inspiration Would you be able to handle trying to manage many different tasks at once while trying to prioritize them at the same time? In Beyond Basketball, Coach K has encountered many different challenges with his family and his team in situations that are difficult for one to go through alone. Mike Krzyzewski in Beyond Basketball, an inspirational and motivational book makes readers question the meaning of life. Mike Krzyzewski wants to teach readers lessons about what he has gone through and how he is able to make their journeys easier. His book talks about different situations and different levels of difficulty as well. Also, he goes into detail about how he approached the situation and what he would have done differently. Then he goes into more detail about what he enjoyed about the experience and who has all helped him through that time. This quote goes through some of the most important lessons in life, “No matter how involved you are in what you do, no matter how many hours a week you devote to your career pursuits, you must always remember that your family is your primary team,” (71). This one happens to be about family and how to prioritize life’s most important things. Coach K’s book is recommended for readers of all ages because of the importance life lessons that you are able to learn from it. Even though it is seen as being a sports book, you do not have to be in love with sports. Just as long as you enjoy reading inspirational and motivating books, I would then recommend reading this book. I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars due to its quality. Mike Krzyzewski has a one of a kind book that is uplifting and interesting to read. It makes you look forward to what the next chapters will contain.

Cody Jones Bryan NeuschwanderEnglish 2 12 December 2016 The book Beyond Basketball by Mike Krzyzewski is a Bibliography about Mike Krzyzewski's like and coaching career. It's a great book for anyone that plays any sport, he separates the chapters into different goals each time. He emphasizes having good character wherever you go in life and keeping friends close but family closer because they will lift you up in hard times of a loss or a win in life. He talks about being motivated to be the best and to the best you can in everything you do in life. The one thing he talked about that caught my attention was learning from your mistakes and others. Because you can only learn if you don't want it to happen to you or for it to happen again. What really got a reaction out of me was that his old coach Bob Knight was a good mentor because he taught him that the skills you have on the court them come off and help you have good manners and better outlooks in life.It was persuasive to me because it helped me get my devotional for basketball and it When you have been in a particular business for a long time or for me when you have been through a long season of basketball you can find yourself getting caught up in the complexities of what you're doing and forget about the fundamentals. It's important to remind your team that the essicial of basketball are the building blocks. I used that as my devotional and it helped us get the win against wapello because we went to the basic and finished every time. I think that the audience is good for anyone in a sport of coach because it reminds you about the fundamentals.

Beyond Basketball is a book written by Mike Krzyzewski. Mike Krzyzewski is the head coach of Duke University’s men's basketball team and is often known as Coach K. In this book, Coach K gives forty short essays centered on keywords. He uses these keywords every day to motivate, teach, and inspire his players on and off the court. By writing this book, Coach K hopes to guide the reader to success, just as he did for his players.I personally, really liked this book. I liked this book because each chapter is about a different keyword. For example, Chapter 1 is about adaptability, Chapter 2 is about adversity, and Chapter 3 is about balance. I also really liked this book because the keywords and lessons apply to everyday life. For example, Chapter 3 is about balance. In my everyday life, I have to remember balance. I must have balance between my family, friends, sports, etc. Another reason why I liked this book is because the chapters have stories about the particular keyword. For example, the chapter that talks about family gives a story about Coach K’s daughter. To me, this writing is powerful. It is powerful because it is about basketball and I play basketball. It is also powerful because Mike Krzyzewski is the coach of the Duke men’s basketball team and I enjoy watching his team play. I would recommend this book to anyone who plays sports, wants to learn important life lessons to help them in every aspect of their life, or anyone who just wants to read a good book. Overall, I think Beyond Basketball is an amazing book that offers important life lessons, that anyone should read if they play sports, want to learn life lessons, or anyone who just wants to read a good book.

Reviewed by Me for TeensReadToo.comMike Krzyzewski is the men's basketball coach of the Duke University team. For many years, Duke's team has found itself at the top of the college basketball circuit, and it owes a lot of that success to the wisdom, discipline, and dedication of its coach. Coach Krzyzewski knows that one sentence, beyond any other, can inspire in his players the determination to succeed: "I believe in you." In life--whether it be academics, athleticism, or anything else--knowing that someone believes in you can make the difference between losing and winning. Coach K. knows that, and so do his players. BEYOND BASKETBALL is broken down into numerous short "chapters," which include the following: Adaptability, Adversity, Balance, Belief, Care, Challenges, Collective Responsibility, Commitment, Communication, Courage, Crisis Management, Culture, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Excellence, Failure, Family, Friendship, Fundamentals, Giving Back, Guidance, Imagination, Integrity, Learning, Love, Motivation, Next Play, Ownership, Passion, Poise, Pressure, Pride, Respect, Selflessness, Standards, Talent, Trust, Will, and Work. Whether you're a follower of college basketball or not, BEYOND BASKETBALL is a fitting book that deals with working hard, playing hard, and dedicating yourself to whatever goals you set for yourself.

The reason I started reading this book was to become a better leader. I was skimming through a couple of books, and this one really caught my eye. In the book Coach K. literally spells out his formula of being a successful leader. He also breaks it down by chapter on what he thinks the keys of success, our anyone that wants to become a successful leader I think should read this book. This book Beyond Basketball is just that. It not only teaches you about how he became a very successful coach or an outstanding leader, but he gives you lessons on how to handle the everyday life adversity you are faced with. He also explains the proper way to handle them. This book is good because it is straight to it, Coach K did not really focus on his life story or basketball. He just used it as real life examples and teaches you what he has been through. And what he did right or what he did wrong. Whatever his example is it always comes back around to the title of the chapter which I think is pretty cool. I highly recommend this book to any person that has a leadership role or wants to be a leader its a great book to learn from its very interesting and intriguing and preaches great values thats why I rated it a Five star book

Beyond Basketball is a book that sees past the crowd, fans, players, score, wins and losses. It is a book that Coach K wrote with his daughter, Jamie L. Spatola, to describe other things the game of basketball brings to a player or coache’s life. Coach K takes one word that means something to him, and tells a story about that word. They are stories that mean something special to him and have changed his life. These words bring emotion, happiness, and pride to Coach and the Duke Blue Devils. I feel that Beyond Basketball is a great book for anyone. It doesn’t focus on the game of basketball, itself. It talks about what it can do to one’s life and the different life lessons and experiences that can come along with it. I recommend this book to athletes especially. I feel that sometimes athletes worry too much about wins and losses and less about the ways that basketball can change you as a person, for the better. It can teach a person discipline, pride, leadership, and what is important in life. Coach K does a great job of explaining these different things. That is why I recommend it to other athletes. I am an athlete and this book inspired me to become a better person, not a better player, and at the end of the day that is what matters the most.

Just so you know, I am a Carolina fan through and through. However, I understand and believe that Coach K is a great coach. He is the reason Duke is on the map. To me, the only reason. But I leave that for you to decide. Regardless, I read this book because I wanted some motivation and I have heard that he is good at giving it. This book did not disappoint. It was a quick read. There are about 40 chapters and each chapter focuses for a few short pages on a word that Coach K believes defines leadership, especially his own. It was short and sweet. And I am yearning for books that get to the point quicker and that define it better. However, this book was slow at points and I felt like he was trying to write a book instead of letting one flow from him (which is the reason for the 3 stars instead of 4). Not sure, but it could just be my Carolina-bias. Go Tarheels.

This was a very simple, but thought-provoking book by one of the greatest basketball coaches of all-time: Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K). He has coached Duke University since the 1980-81 season, along with the US Men's National Teams for almost a decade. This book's unique approach was to take 40 words of principle (i.e. Courage, Enthusiasm, Will, etc.), explained them, and used a story to illustrate his intention. They can be used on the basketball court, in business, family, or other settings. It gave me a vision to create my own book to define the words, take ownership of them myself, and write my own book using my own stories that could make them more meaningful to myself, those I coach/teach, others who know me, etc.If you are a coach and/or want to become a better leader, this book can certainly be of assistance!

This is a great book for athletes, coaches, and anyone looking to improve themselves in life. Coach K, the winning Duke basketball coach, presents a series of chapters that each focus on a word that is important in his life and his coaching career. He explains why that word is critical to success and provides concrete examples to illustrate his point. This would be a great book to use in a classroom. After reading a few chapters, the teacher might assign each student to identify 5 words that are important to him/her. Then each student could write an essay about why that word is important and provide stories from their own lives to illustrate the point. Common Core Standard: Cite strong textual evidence to support explicit and inferred ideas.

Beyond Basketball Coach K’s Keywords For Success, is written by Mike Krzyzewski and Jamie K. Spatola. He has been the head coach at Duke University for 27 years and is still coaching. For Coach K some words have a special importance. These are Coach K’s keywords for success. The forty chapters are how each word impacts him and his life whatever he is doing. If he’s coaching his team, with his family, or helping around the community. This book will teach what success is and how to be successful with the powerful words given to you by Coach K.I liked reading this book mainly because I like reading sports books. This book teaches how to be successful in each chapter. The book is interesting throughout, and has a good story every chapter.

I definitely enjoyed this book a lot more than i thought i would. Ill admit the main reason I chose it was because I needed a book for my English class. However, as I read it, I was really inspired by coach K and have honestly tried to incorporate some of his life lessons into my own life. Since it would be classified as a self help or self improvement book it is set up in the very short chapter format. This kind of annoyed me at first but as i read more and more of the book I got used to it and realize that it wouldn't have made sense in any other format. Overall i would give this book 5 stars and absolutely hope that anyone who enjoys reading give it a shot.

Coach K is a class act! This little treasure was incredibly simple but filled with stories to inspire you to live a great life. A few quotes that stuck out to me were: 1. "Belief (of others) in you does not occur naturally; you have to work for it, earn it, and continue to deserve it." 2. "The ability to develop your talent is a talent in itself." 3. Speaking about the most successful players/people he has known he says "They embraced work as the process that you go through to become exceptional." I am so glad my own kids have read this. Pick up this quick read; It has so much wisdom shared by a very respectable leader!

First off, I'd go to war for Coach K. Especially after this book. It's a very simple read, could be read over a weekend. It touches upon single words that Coach K believes make good leaders, teachers, parents, and coaches. They are the attributes that have made Coach K arguably the greatest coach in all of sports. It's not full of information and statistical analysis-which is a breath of fresh air from some of the other leadership focused books. I'd recommend it to someone looking for a simple read and has an interest in sports. You'll enjoy learning about Coach K in a more personal way as well.

Coach K is probably the most noteworthy and succussful college and olympic basketball coach of this generation. That combined with his quiet and stable demeanor make him one of the most likable coaches to entrust your children to. The book borders on a self-improvement and shares his values and leadership skills onto those that he coaches. The only catch is that it is simple common sense and can be a little preachy if you already have taken most of what is covered to heart. An attractive part of the book is when he describes how and when he used these values in his coaching and gives examples with specific situations and players,

Greatest basketball coach of all time, Coach K. Beyond Basketball is motivational book, not just for the avid basketball fan, but for anyone looking for a self-improvement book. Its a quick, easy read, and for any basketball that is talked about he explains it in Lamen's terms so that causal fan can understand. I'd recommend this to any businessman, leader, or someone looking for stronger conviction and better morals.

A good read, nice essays about 40 different words having to do with leadership, commitment, teamwork, etc...Great for anyone in a team setting or just for daily life, work, family, school. Coach K is one of the best leaders I have ever seen and one of my favorite people. I got to hear him speak this Fall and that was great to hear as well, he is a great storyteller and has so much knowledge and enthusiasm.

Not just a great coach or leader, but is superb teacher. Coach "K" should be Teacher "K"-- the book is filled with great one words that he talks about, but what stands out is this book is not the end, it is his knowledge of understanding he must commit every day to get better. One verse that he hit on was he does not say "defense" or "win" -- his team says "together"-- wow what a teacher, we all can learn from a hall of fame teacher.

I expected more from Coach K. The one thing I liked about what he taught his team is that you must always make eye contact with a teammate or coach. It's how you know they're telling the truth and being vulnerable with you. A couple of other mediocre sound bytes I enjoyed were, "You outlive your darkest day" and "Winners expect to win".

a nice collection of stories and suggestions centered on various "keywords for success" - adaptability, commitment, excellence, integrity, trust, etc. Krzyzewski uses these words with his own teams and here communicates how various words and concepts can be used in various settings - business, home, family, etc. nothing groundbreaking, but a nice reminder.
