The Great Fake Book Reviews
This book is a neglected masterpiece.
A very interesting and frustrating book to read! Written in the form of letters, a diary, newspaper articles and the occasional conversation it can be hard to follow. It also jumps back and forth in time from the end of World War Two to the Iranian hostage crisis during President Carter's administration. The author, Vance Bourjaily, states, "...I was trying to hear and quote my people, rather than describe and discuss them."I enjoyed the characters and all the different styles of writing and speaking. The story was good but moved very slowly. The story is about Charles and his journey to find out about a father that died before he was born, one his mother will not talk about. Actually, the story is more about Mike, the father, and his vagabond, musical, strange trip after coming out of the army after the war. This is a book to be enjoyed for its language and style than for its action. It never really took off as a story and died with a sad sigh. If you can find it, it is worth reading. It appears to be out of print, but is available online.
An interconnected mess of forms, letters, dialog only chunks, and journals telling a father and son's stories in two different time lines. I took a while to really grab me, but eventually did with a great tragic love story in the past storyline.
