Wm. F. Reese Reviews
Born in South Dakota and raised in Central Washington, William F. Reese painted for over 50 years. He created an astonishing body of work that includes oils, pastels, watercolors, sculptures, etchings, and instructional books. Though prolific and proficient in several media, Reese was likely best known as one of America's premier plein air artists, reveling in the majesty of the Northwest and setting up his easel outdoors in all kinds of weather and in every kind of location. Many art magazines in the last 35 years have published articles on Reese's work. He was the subject of an award-winning book by Mary N. Balcomb entitled Wm. F. Reese, American Artist, published in 1984, as well as Masterworks of American Art (1985) by Arlene Kirkpatrick.Mary Balcomb's book, with a forward by Wilson Hurley, is a richly illustrated and informative book, containing a special section of artist's notes, 44 b&w sketches and 78 full-color plates. One of Bill's helpful nuggets: "You have to grab the information as it comes by. Position yourself at a comfortable distance from the subject and angle your easel so that you look over and beyond it to the subject, rather than having to turn your head each time you want to look at it."Bill wrote in a letter to Mary, July 18, 2002:"I was just thinking back this morning, to 1984, just after the Reese book came out. I had sent one to Sergei and he called to thank me and tell me how much he enjoyed it. He liked it so much, in fact, that he said if ever a book was written on him he hoped Mary Balcomb would do it. I know I told you this before but it seems so appropriate now, after 18 years it has finally come to be. He must be up there looking down with that funny little smirk of his saying, 'Soooo vot tuk so longa, yah?' But I know he would be pleased. God bless your tenacity. Hopefully this will be a step towards placing Sergei Bongart into his rightful place in art history. He was a great man and a great painter, and should be recognized as such."
I like this American artist. I met him and watched him demo an oil painting. The book has two excellent demos, too.
